Pilates for stress relief

Gentle and calm Pilates stretch sequences to help reduce muscle tension and relieve stress

This is a short mat-based class which is aimed to help reduce muscle tension and stress with some gentle stretches and exercises. The class begins with some upper body stretches in sitting and moves into four-point kneeling, onto our fronts and onto our backs on the mat. The class is suitable for most levels but as always please work to a level that you feel comfortable with.

This class includes:

  • Sitting upper body reaches and corkscrew
  • Four-point kneeling cat stretch
  • Swimming
  • Child pose stretch
  • Cobra stretch
  • One leg kick
  • Bridging with arm raises
  • Opposite arms and legs
  • Rotation stretches
  • Sitting shoulder rolls and neck stretch

We start the class sitting on the mat with some upper body reaches and corkscrew exercises to gently mobilise through the upper body. We then move into four-point kneeling and mobilise through the spine with a cat stretch. In this position we then lengthen through the body and work on some movement control with a swimming exercise. Moving down onto our fronts on the mat we then work our glutes and hamstrings with a one leg kick before stretching our spines into extension with a cobra stretch.

We then come around onto our backs on the mat and mobilise through the spine a little more with a Bridge exercise and lengthen through the body with our opposite arm and leg movement. Staying on our backs we then gently stretch our spines into rotation. Finishing in sitting with some shoulder rolls and neck stretches.
